ALVMA's 29th Annual Conference for

Food Animal Veterinarians

in conjunction with the 2020 Bob Carson Beef Cattle Symposium

March 13-15, 2020

Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine

History of the ALVMA’s Conference for Food Animal Veterinarians

ALVMA’s Conference for Food Animal Veterinarians was formed in 1992 by Dr. James G. Floyd, Extension Veterinarian, to provide continuing education focused on timely topics for veterinarians engaged in food animal practice. In 2006, Dr. Soren Rodning became Extension Veterinarian, as well as Chair of the ALVMA Food Animal Affairs Committee and Program Chairman. The program has expanded over the years to include some equine and practice management sessions to fully assist the food and mixed animal practitioner.  In 2018, Dr. Andrew Lovelady joined Dr. Rodning as co-Chair of the ALVMA Food Animal Affairs Committee.

Historically, the meetings were held at The Alabama 4-H Center in Columbiana, AL because of its central location and relaxed rural setting. The conference has seen success over the last 28 years with attendees traveling from all over Alabama as well as surrounding states to attend.

What is New for 2020?

The ALVMA is joining forces with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the Auburn University Department of Animal Sciences to bring you the 29th Annual Conference for Food Animal Veterinarians and the 2020 Bob Carson Beef Cattle Symposium. With this change, we are expecting to attract more food and mixed animal veterinarians as well as a large number of beef cattle producers.

New Location
We will be moving to a new venue in 2020 as part of an effort to provide even higher quality continuing education. We will be meeting on March 13-15, 2020 at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine (AUCVM) Vet Education Center. This is a big change, as we have met at the Alabama 4-H Center in Columbiana, AL for the past 28 years. While we all have very fond memories of this venue, due to it’s increasing popularity it has become more difficult to schedule activities there. We are also very limited with the quantity and type of wet-labs we can offer at the 4-H Center. Despite moving to a new venue, we still plan to host a steak dinner followed by the always popular Downie Awards and Practice Tips on Saturday evening. Hopefully our new venue will attract many new participants that you can showcase your products and servcies to, as well as create new contacts for future sales.

Friday Only - Joint Conference with Veterinarians and Beef Cattle Producers
Another exciting change is that the inaugural Bob Carson Beef Cattle Symposium will be part of the conference on Friday afternoon, March 13 (only). As most of you know, Dr. Robert (Bob) Carson was a beloved veterinarian, teacher, mentor, friend and family man with a personality all his own. Unfortunately, we lost Dr. Carson to cancer shortly after his retirement in 2015. He is missed every day by many. Dr. Carson loved many things, especially his family, veterinary medicine and beef cattle. The Bob Carson Beef Cattle Symposium is a way to pay tribute to a man that meant so much to so many. The symposium will be held jointly with the Auburn University Department of Animal Sciences Beef Cattle Conference and the ALVMA 29th Annual Conference for Food Animal Veterinarians. This will be a great opportunity to mingle with not just your veterinary clients but also, your producer clients. Don’t worry, if your target clients are only veterinarians, the attendees for each conference will have different colored badges so you can clearly identify the type of client you are speaking with.
