New ALVMA Emergency Response Units Arrive
|
| The Veterinary Emergency Response Committee of the Alabama VMA applied for a $20,000 grant from the American Veterinary Medical Foundation for the purpose of purchasing mobile disaster response equipment and for training of volunteers. This grant was approved and matched through the generosity of our own Alabama Veterinary Medical Foundation. With these matching funds two mobile companion animal equipment trailers were ordered complete with everything needed to handle emergency temporary shelter for 60 companion animals per unit. |
The sixteen foot trailers arrived in December and can be deployed to provide additional assistance to the state animal sheltering network in a major disaster such as a hurricane, or can be sent to a local area to assist in smaller disasters or to provide additional support. |
Included as standard equipment in each unit are 45 large folding cages, 15 medium folding cages, 5kw generator, first aid kits, pressure washer, shop vac, 50 foot water hose and three 50 foot power cords. Other contents include tab band collars for animal identification, rubber gloves, registration log book, Polaroid camera and ten film cassettes, animal intake registration forms, hand washing station, quaternary disinfectant, bleach, litter boxes, bowls, trash bags and containers, flashlights and other miscellaneous items. |
The mobile units will be graphically enhanced on the outside to identify them as part of the Alabama VMA emergency response efforts. |
With the addition of the mobile pet sheltering systems to the resources already available in Alabama during disasters, we will be much more efficient at meeting the needs of our veterinarians, our citizens, and ultimately our animals. |
The Alabama VMA, through its service to over 750 veterinarians, continues to promote the welfare of the State of Alabama, its citizens, and its animals |
Thank you to the Foundations of the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association for their generous support toward disaster relief efforts.
