Dr. Larry L. Chasteen of Pell City assumed the presidency of the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association (ALVMA) during ceremonies held June 27th, 2009 at the Association's 102nd Annual Convention.  He vowed to continue
the good work of his predecessors and work diligently to promote veterinary medicine.

During his acceptance speech Dr. Chasteen recalled his early childhood and what influenced his decision to become a veterinarian, specifically his love for animals.  He recanted a story about how as a child he had a fascination with formaldehyde.  He told those in attendance that his mother often said he was, quote "Going to be either a veterinarian or a serial killer when he grew up."  As the laughter subsided, Dr. Chasteen said "My family and probably a lot of others were pleased with my decision to become a veterinarian."  He encouraged his colleagues to become involved in the association and to help it grow.  Dr. Chasteen said "Veterinary medicine is a powerful profession and we have a lot of influence to help both animals and humans."

Dr. Chasteen received his veterinary degree from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1984.
